Know a constipated cat
The main cause of contipation in cats is usually lack of water or dehydration. Other minor causes include tumors in intestines, hairballs and pain from other injuries. It's quite easy to know when your cat is suffering from constipation. He could be straining, arching his body and vibrating immensely at the litter box. His stools would be lesser than normal, small and dry.

Remedies for cat constipation
Get pumpkin puree at your local store or make your own and include them in your cat's food. Pumpkins are a good source of fibre and have high water content which can help in digestion and cure constipation. 2 - 3 teaspoons will do just fine.

Miralax works too. Start with 1/8 teaspoons twice a day in food, and increase as needed up to a maximum of a quarter of a teaspoon.

Another remedy would be Lactulose, a sugary syrup that keeps the stool soft; therefore it's easier for the cat to pass. Mix it with your cat's food.

The worst case scenario would be the Sub-total Colectomy surgery, which is a surgical operation that removes the colon and joins the small intestine to the rectum to shorten the passage of the intestine. This is when constipation is at its worst degree, and avoiding surgery would prove fatal for the cat.

Prevention is better than cure
Always remember the most important thing: Prevention is better than cure. Ensure that your cat has sufficient water everyday and a balanced diet. Learn more about maintaining your cat's health in our article Cat Health.
